যদিও গ্রামাফোন কোম্পানীতে ১৯১৪ সাল থেকেই, পুজো উপলক্ষে এক গুচ্ছ গান দিয়ে ‘পুজোর গানের ডালি’ সাজানো শুরু হয়েছিল। কিন্তু কালজয়ী আধুনিক গানের সূচনাপর্ব ত্রিশ দশকের শেষের দিকেই।
১৯৩৪ সালে যুথিকা রায়ের গাওয়া ” সাঁঝের তারকা আমি “। ১৯৩৮ সালে উমা বসুর গাওয়া “চাঁদ কহে চামেলী গো “কিংবা ১৯৪০ সালে গীতা দাসের গাওয়া “ছিল চাঁদ মেঘের পারে”। শৈল দেবীর গাওয়া “বরষার মেঘ নামে”। মাধুরী সেনগুপ্তর গাওয়া “তোমারই পথপানে চাহি “। শৈল দেবীর গাওয়া ” বনের চামেলী ফিরে আয়”। কে এল সাইগালের গাওয়া “নাইবা ঘুমালে প্রিয়” “এখনই উঠিবে চাঁদ” সে যুগে অত্যন্ত জনপ্রিয় আধুনিক গান বা পুজোর গান হয়ে উঠেছিল। এই গান গুলির জনপ্রিয় আধুনিক গান বা পুজোর গান হয়ে উঠেছিল। এই গানগুলির জনপ্রিয়তাকে মূলধন করে,৭০ কিংবা ৮০-৯০ দশকের শিল্পীরা সেসব গান “রিমেক” করেছিলেন। এই সময় বহু স্বনামধন্য গুণী গীতিকার ও সুরকাররা, এই নতুন ধারার গান নির্মাণে ব্রতী হয়েছিলেন। এদের মধ্যে গীতিকার হিসেবে উল্লেখযোগ্য নাম শৈলেন রায়, হেমেন্দ্রকুমার রায়, সুবোধ পুরকায়েস্থ, অজয় ভট্টাচাৰ্য, সুনির্মল বসু, প্রণব রায় তো ছিলেনই, সুরকারদের মধ্যে ছিলেন, কমল দাসগুপ্ত, সুবল দাসগুপ্ত, তুলসী লাহিড়ী, কৃষ্ণচন্দ্র দে, রাইচাঁদ বড়াল, পঙ্কজ কুমার মল্লিক। এদের হাত ধরেই চল্লিশ দশক থেকে বাংলা আধুনিক পূজার গানের ধারাটি সমৃদ্ধ হয়েছে।
সেরা পুজোর গান অ্যালবামের প্রথম ভলিউমে তাই চল্লিশের দশক থেকে ষাটের দশক পর্যন্ত প্রায় কুড়ি বছরেরও বেশি সময়কালের প্রেক্ষাপটে মোট ২১’টি অত্যন্ত জনপ্রিয় ও কালজয়ী গানকে সংকলিত করা হয়েছে।
